Jacob Bedingfield could only give credit to his teammates. Despite the seniors 46 points, eight rebounds and eight assists, he unselfishly thanked his fellow Covenant Rams for the team effort that allowed his tremendous performance.
Yet somehow, Bedingfields showing wasnt enough for Covenant to overcome CFCA in GISA Region 1-AA play Tuesday night, as the Lancers edged the Rams out 91-89.
We had an offensive game plan, so we definitely did what we were supposed to do offensively, Bedingfield said. But defensively, we cant give up 91 points.
The Lancers (11-5, 3-1 region) were led by a similar performance of 36 points from junior Jason Olivas.
Olivas, too, thanked his teammates.
I just play confident and let my teammates give me the ball, Olivas said. I trust them a lot, they play a big role in how I play. I feel off them, and they feed off me.
The two guards came to a head as the clock wound down to 1:10 left in the fourth quarter. Down six points, Bedingfield stepped to the free-throw line and missed two shots despite going 14-for-20 overall in the game.
Fourteen seconds later, Olivas stepped up to the line on the other end of the court. He sank his two shots.
Coach told me to get the ball in my hands, and they put me at the line, and Ive been doing it for awhile, Im confident, so I just walked up there, cleared my mind and shot the ball, Olivas said. Glad they went in.
CFCA head coach Jeremiah Sattazahn couldnt say enough about his junior.
Jason Olivas is gonna play at the next level, Sattazahn said. Its up to him how far he wants to go. He is a flat out ballplayer. Hes one of the best players Ive ever coached. Hes smart, and hes not afraid.
The Rams (5-9, 0-3) played in front of a packed home crowd in the region rivalry game.
This was a pretty big game, Sattazahn said. We want to compete hard against our region opponents, particularly ones in our own town.
The CFCA girls beat Covenant 37-25. After a slow first half, the Rams kept it close and only trailed by two after three quarters. An 18-8 fourth for the Lancers ensured the victory.
CFCA never trailed as Destini Bush spread 21 points throughout the game.
