A 46-year-old west Bibb County woman died late Monday morning after running into a utility pole being hauled down Mercer University Drive.

Camilla Ann Chappell, of Morgan Court in Lizella, was pronounced dead at The Medical Center of Central Georgia about 35 minutes after the 11:10 a.m. accident, said Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones.

Chappell was traveling west behind a Georgia Power crew pulling the pole on a trailer in the left lane approaching the traffic light at Anthony Road, said Lt. Sean DeFoe, public information officer for the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.

She failed to stop her gray Honda Accord when the utility crew stopped in front of her at the light, DeFoe said.

The pole went through the front windshield and out the back window of the car.

Bibb County traffic officers are investigating the accident.
