Fireworks safety

December 30, 2013

If your New Year’s Eve celebration involves fireworks, you should be sure to follow these precautions:

• Have a water bucket or hose nearby

• Wear safety goggles and gloves

• Read label directions and only use legal fireworks from a licensed source

• Light one firework or sparkler at a time

• Never hold a lit firework in your hand

• Stay outdoors, on a level surface away from buildings and trees

• Adult supervision required, never allow young children to handle or light fireworks

• Don’t mix alcohol or drugs with fireworks and sparklers

• Never relight fireworks that do not ignite; wait 15-20 minutes before approaching, soak them in water and safely discard

• Secure pets inside, away from loud noises
