MWA cleaning up major sewage spill

December 30, 2013

The Macon Water Authority is cleaning up a major sewage spill Monday in the 1000 block of Lower Poplar Street.

Mike Beard, of MWA, said the spill, which occurred in an isolated area, was caused by a hydraulic overload of the line. The size of the spill was undetermined, Beard said, but would be at least be 10,000 gallons, which classifies it as a major spill.

“Basically it got into a ditch that will eventually reach the Ocmulgee River,” Beard said.

He said he hoped crews would have it cleaned up sometime Tuesday.
