Iowa couple dies in I-75 accident south of Perry

An Iowa couple died Sunday in an accident on Interstate 75 about 10 miles south of Perry.

Kenneth Eugene Behrens, 64, and his wife, Margaret Elaine Behrens, 65, were believed to be traveling to the Outback Bowl in Tampa, Fla., when they were rear-ended at 5 p.m. in the southbound lanes near mile marker 125 in Houston County, said Georgia State Patrol Cpl. Tre Howard.

According to an email from Franka Young, spokeswoman for the Department of Public Safety, the Behrens’ Ford Escape was slowing for traffic when it was hit from behind by a Kia Forte driven at a high rate of speed by 19-year-old Benjamin Blake of Harrison, Ohio.

The impact caused the Escape to overturn into the guardrail, killing the couple from Wilton, Iowa. Kenneth Behrens was unrestrained and thrown from the driver’s seat into the passenger seat during the rollover, Young stated in the email.

Blake, whose vehicle also left the road and hit the guardrail, was not hurt in the accident.

The crash is being investigated by the GSP’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team. Charges are pending the completion of the investigation, Young stated.
