Here’s a snapshot of some of John Stumbo’s accomplishments as Fort Valley mayor:

• Balanced budgets, clean audits and strong reserves

• Millage rate increased 8.43 percent in 14 years

• City limits increased through annexation

• Redevelopment of former 300,000-square-foot Dan River plant to Blue Bird fabrication plant

• Supervised application, receipt of $45 million in grants, including $32 million from EPA federal Superfund

• Instrumental in cleanup of contamination of former Woolfolk Chemical Works, which manufactured pesticides, with the Superfund grant money. Site is now the Fort Valley Festival Park.

• Oversaw $300,000 worth of renovations downtown

• Developed downtown Christmas lights, decoration program

• Sought and received $1.5 million in grants for new streetscape for State University Drive

• Recruited, assisted with development of new Dollar General, Wendy’s
