Macon-Bibb District 2 election details announced

The next election for the Macon-Bibb County District 2 commission seat will be open to people who voted in previous elections, people who didn’t and even people who hadn’t been registered to vote.

Eligible residents must register to vote in the Jan. 14 election by Dec. 23, according to a schedule released Tuesday by the Macon-Bibb County Board of Elections. The board also began taking absentee ballot applications Tuesday.

A judge ordered the new election to redo a flawed Oct. 15 runoff election between Henry Ficklin and Larry Schlesinger. The number of voters placed in the wrong district exceeded Schlesinger’s apparent margin of victory in that election.

The bulk of voters’ attention will come in the new year, after the Macon-Bibb County government has launched.

The schedule leaves the elections board accepting absentee ballot applications through Jan. 10.

A single day of Saturday voting is set for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 4. Early in-person voting will run Jan. 6-10, between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

On the actual election day of Jan. 14, voting will run from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The elections board said eligible voters belong in a number of precincts: All of East Macon 1, which votes at River Edge Behavioral Health Center; parts of East Macon 4 voting at Northeast High School; all of Godfrey 1, voting at Pentecostal Temple; parts of Godfrey 2, voting at Memorial Gym; parts of Godfrey 4, voting at Bruce Elementary School; and all of Howard 4, voting at North Macon Park.

The board said it’s mailing letters to voters listed in District 2. Anyone with questions can call the board at 621-6622.
