Almost 1,000 elementary school students from Bibb, Houston, and Crawford counties attended a performance of the Nutcracker of Middle Georgia at the Grand Opera House in Macon Wednesday.

The cast 115 strong includes both local dancers and ballet professionals. The prized role of Clara this year is danced by Dagny Ingle.

Donn Rodenroth has filled the role of the Rat King for longer than he can remember. "I'm just an old fat guy up there having fun," he said, "It's whatever the crowd reacts to; the rats are supposed to be dysfunctional and we can't do anything right. It changes from night to night." he said.

Outside the performance, at least one student was inspired to dance in the street. Heard Elementary School student Ciara Passmore broke into dance as she and classmates left the Grand Opera House. Passmore said she enjoys dance lessons but it could be a while before she becomes the Snow Queen or the Dew Drop.

The Nutcracker of Middle Georgia runs through Sunday. Tickets are available for all performances.
