WARNER ROBINS -- The first of two roundabouts on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard may be completed earlier than previously projectioned, according to a Tuesday news release from the city.
The roundabout -- at Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Wellborn Road -- will open in December, the release states. It also notes the proper way to use a roundabout.
Drivers approaching a roundabout must reduce speed, be prepared to stop for pedestrians and bicyclists, and look for potential conflicts with vehicles already in the circulatory roadway, the release states.
When the city began construction on it in September, the estimated completion date was March 2014.
The second roundabout at Martin Luther King and University boulevards was set to begin after the first was completed. The Tuesday news release did not mention plans for that roundabout.
The roundabouts are part of a project discussed since before 2001, when it included a special purpose local option sales tax. The original plan for the funds was to revitalize Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard with lighting and sidewalks. The roundabouts were added later.
