Movie starring Jessica Alba, Samuel L. Jackson to be filmed in Perry

Staff reportNovember 14, 2013

A movie starring Jessica Alba and Samuel L. Jackson will begin filming in Perry this weekend.

“Barely Lethal,” the story of a 16-year-old assassin who fakes her own death and enrolls in high school, will shoot scenes at the Guardian Centers, said Sheila Jones, executive director of the Perry Area Convention and Visitors Bureau. Hailee Steinfeld, who is in the recently released “Ender’s Game,” plays the main character of Megan.

Alba plays Megan’s nemesis, and Jackson portrays Megan’s mentor. The film also features Sophie Turner, who goes undercover at the high school to bring back Megan.

Houston County is part of the state’s Camera Ready program, and Jones is a liaison. Movie producers send out leads that they’re looking for a certain venue, “and the Guardian Center was what they were looking for,” Jones said.

The Guardian Centers, located at the site of the former Northrop Grumman Corp. plant, is a massive disaster training facility that features a sprawling mock city. The $51 million center opened in 2012.

Jones said Perry officials are “beyond excited” about the short- and long-term economic impact filming the movie there will have for the area.
