Bibb County-based Goodwill Industries opened Wednesday a Job Connections resource center in the Pleasant Hill historic district.
The Pleasant Hill Job Connections is in the Campus Club building at Strong Tower Fellowship Church, 2193 Vineville Ave.
Campus Club is a nonprofit organization that offers an after-school program at the church for children from kindergarten through ninth grade.
Goodwills Job Connections provides resources to job seekers and employers, with job search and employment assistance available free of charge. Resources include local and regional job leads, access to computers, Internet, copiers, phones and fax machines.
The newest Job Connections location is a collaborative effort with Campus Club supported financially by the Charles H. Jones Family Foundation, said Jim Stiff, president and CEO of Goodwill Industries of Middle Georgia and the Central Savannah River Area.
Dwight Jones, representing his family foundation, approached Goodwill with the plan.
(Jones) said we have this great thing going with Campus Club, but we have parents of the 125-plus youth we are working with and many of them are unemployed, Stiff said. Jones said the foundation could either duplicate what Goodwill does or it could help underwrite a Job Connections at the Campus Club location.
We liked the concept because its collaborating and putting the strengths of different organizations to really help a whole family and the whole community, Stiff said.
The foundation agreed to fund the program with about $50,000 for a year and then see how it goes, Stiff said. The jobs program could be a good influence on the children in the Campus Club as they see their parents try to better themselves.
This is Goodwills ninth Job Connections location and second in Macon. It has three in Augusta, and one each in Warner Robins, Dublin, Eatonton and Aiken, S.C.
In 2014, Goodwill plans to relocate the Job Connection program from its main campus on Eisenhower Parkway back to Goodwills building at 240 Broadway, Stiff said.
