Four GMC runners finished in the top 10 Saturday to lead the Bulldogs to a second consecutive state championship at the GHSA state cross country meet in Carrollton.

Will Archer finished second to pace the Bulldogs, who snapped a 30-plus year state championship drought with the win last year.

Archer ran 17:48, nine seconds behind winner Dylan Smith of Gordon Lee. Archer finished third in 2012, but he shaved nearly 30 seconds off his time.

The top three individuals finished more than a minute ahead of the pack.

Tom Drew finished fourth overall, while teammates Ethan Spires (seventh) and Chase Sheffield (eighth) gave GMC four finishers in the top eight.

Perry finished fourth in the Class AAAA boys race.

Jackson Reid and John Weaks finished 12th and 13th, respectively, for the Panthers.

Veterans’ Michael Rowlands finished 11th in AAAA.

Perry’s Abby Booth finished third in AAAA. Anna Leigh Nix, of Mary Persons, finished fifth and Perry’s Tiffany Mountin finished ninth.

Veterans had the best team finish in AAAA at eighth, led by top 25 finishes by Josi Giovinazzo and Bethanie Bailey.

The Bleckley County boys finished third in Class AA after getting top 25 finishers from Logan Bridges (13th) and Austin Cook (23th). The Royals girls finished fourth, led by Ellen Powell (15th) and Madison Powell (25th).

The FPD girls finished fourth in the Class A private school meet, while the boys finished sixth. Jessica Smith (eighth) and Will Martin (ninth) gave the Vikings two top 10 finishers.
