Staff reportsNovember 8, 2013

The first preregistration forum for a new Bibb County charter school will be held Saturday morning.

The Academy for Classical Education is hosting the first of several forums for parents to register their children for the new school.

Saturday’s session will be held at Macon City Hall at 700 Poplar St. from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sessions will begin each half-hour. Parents in the Macon-Bibb County area can also submit preadmission applications online through the school’s website at

The school will hold its first Teacher Recruitment Fair on Nov. 16. The fair will be hosted by Mercer University’s Tift College of Education in the Religious Life Center on the Macon Campus. Interested teachers are asked to bring a resume and attend either the 10 a.m. or noon session.

The Bibb County school board approved the Academy for Classical Education on Sept. 19, 2013. Former educators Laura Perkins and Esterine Stokes are leading efforts to open the school.

The school plans to open with grades K-8 in August 2014 and add a grade level each year until reaching a grade configuration of 6-12.

Students will be taught the importance of reading and writing about ideas, and this methodology will be used in all content areas, according to a statement from the school.
