A Houston County jury convicted a 56-year-old man Friday of the rape of a younger woman he knew from church, prosecutors say.
Alden Thomas was sentenced to 34 years in prison for the Sept. 11, 2012 assault, on the woman the prosecution said he lured to a rental property in the 100-block of Linda Drive.
Chief Assistant District Attorney Erikka Williams, the lead prosecutor on the case, applauded the victim for stepping forward.
There are many women, men and children that have been victims of sexual violence that do not take the first step of coming forward and notifying law enforcement, Williams said in an e-mail.
The victim wisely contacted her doctor and police and made a report, Williams said.
They were able to get a search warrant based on what she told police. Once they were able to search the house, they found evidence of a sexual assault, Williams said.
Samuel F. Hart Jr., a Macon attorney representing Thomas, could not be reached for comment.
