Former FPD standout Taylor Floyd continued his strong recent play Wednesday in the first round of the eGolf Tour’s Cabarrus Classic in Concord, N.C.

Floyd had birdies on his final four holes to finish with a 7-under-par 65 for a two-shot lead in the 54-hole event.

In doing so, Floyd overcame some recent illnesses that have hit him and traveling partner Mitch Krywulycz. They played just a nine-hole practice round Tuesday.

“Mitch and I have been sick lately, so after nine holes, he went to the doctor, and I just chilled out for a bit. Neither one of us was feeling great (Tuesday),” Floyd said in the tour’s release.

Floyd has now posted 18 of his past 25 rounds on the tour in the 60s. He also has advanced through the first round of the Web.com Tour’s qualifying stages and will head to the second round this month.

Floyd took a break after the first stage of qualifying. He finished with seven birdies and no bogeys in Wednesday’s round.

“I wasn’t expecting a whole lot coming into this week, to be honest,” Floyd said. “I just wanted to tune my game back up for second stage and then managed to keep (the ball) in front of me, finally getting some putts to fall on the back nine.

“I was playing well there at the end of that stretch, but this is just my third start out here since the end of August. I was just trying to make sure I didn’t get burnt out by playing too much.”
