Bibb campus police HQ to be renamed for slain officer

Staff reportNovember 6, 2013

The Bibb County school district’s campus police department will be named for an officer who was killed in the line of duty 30 years ago.

The ceremony will honor Euel Thomas “Bubba” Smith, who was shot and killed April 22, 1983.

The dedication will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the building, located at 1065 Anthony Road.

Smith was patrolling at Central High School when he saw a suspicious man wandering the school grounds. The man was 23-year-old James Lee Patterson, who lived on nearby Hillcrest Avenue. Smith questioned the man and put him in his patrol car.

But Patterson grabbed Smith’s .357 Magnum and shot him with his own gun. Smith made it to the hospital but died soon afterward.

Patterson was arrested at the scene, charged with Smith’s slaying and convicted.
