Houston schools win Georgia School Bell Awards

Lake Joy Primary and Morningside Elementary schools have been named 2013 Georgia School Bell Award winners.

Lake Joy Primary won the award for its “Gardening and Recycling Beyond the Classroom” program, while Morningside Elementary won for its “Parents and Teachers Student Activities,” according to a news release.

The awards were presented by the Georgia Association of Elementary School Principals. No more than 10 schools receive the award each year, the release states.

Houston school bus poster contest winners named

Houston County’s first place winners have been selected for the Georgia School Bus Safety Week Poster Contest. The theme was, “At My Stop -- You Stop!”

According to a news release, the first place winners are:

• For grades K-2: Gabby Gilliland, second grade, Linwood Elementary School at C.B. Watson Primary School;

• For grades 3-5: Aleina Achaval, fifth grade, Linwood Elementary at C.B. Watson Primary; and

• For grades 6-8: Courtney Williams, seventh grade, Huntington Middle School.

The winners will go on to the Georgia Department of Education for judging.

The state winner will be entered in the National School Bus Safety Week Poster Contest.
