What we learned
Defense wins championships: Veterans had maybe the most complete defensive effort of the season, holding Mary Persons to 12 negative plays in its 10-0 win. The Warhawks held Mary Persons to 2 yards or fewer on 20 out of 28 rushing plays in claiming the first region championship in program history.
Defense wins rivalry games: The Warner Robins Demons forced five turnovers -- four interceptions -- in a 28-18 win over Northside to snap the Eagles 38-game regular-season winning streak.
Defense wins playoff spots: Houston County was dominant on both sides of the ball in a 38-0 win over Jones County on Thursday, earning the Bears a spot in the playoffs for the first time since 2006. The shutout was the programs first since Sept. 5, 2008 and the first in a region game since 2003.
Perry at Howard, Thursday: The Panthers have to win to stay alive in the race for a playoff spot, while the Huskies are looking to find one region win.
Warner Robins at Lakeside-Evans, Friday: The Demons are coming off an emotional win over Northside on Friday, but that win wont mean much if they lose to Lakeside. Warner Robins claims the region title with a win, but the Demons could fall to fourth with a loss.
Baldwin at Veterans, Friday: The Braves are in the same position as Perry -- they are eliminated from playoff contention with a loss. The Warhawks are seeking a seventh straight win to enter the playoffs with momentum.
FPD at Aquinas, Friday: The Vikings probably did enough in a win over Warren County to earn a playoff spot through the Class A private school power rankings. They would increase the seeding with a win over Aquinas and could forge a three-way tie for the Region 7-A title with Aquinas and Lincoln County.
Mary Persons at West Laurens, Friday: The Bulldogs can get back on track after their shutout loss to Veterans with a win over West Laurens to close the season. The Raiders could end up in a four-way tie for fourth with a Rutland loss and a Perry and Baldwin win. Rutland and Perry both hold head-to-head tiebreakers with West Laurens.
Northeast at Bleckley County, Friday: Bleckley County can lock up its second straight home playoff game with a win over the Raiders.
Tattnall Square at Mount de Sales, Friday: Neither team can win the region championship, but a just as important home playoff game is the prize that awaits the winner.
Taylor County at Macon County, Friday: Macon County could tie for the second spot in the region with a win and a Northeast win over Bleckley County. Taylor County needs a win to stay alive for the playoffs.
