WARNER ROBINS -- After finding itself in early deficits against Northside in each of the past four years, Warner Robins didnt want to fall behind its undefeated rival Friday night.
The Demons couldnt completely dig out of those holes the past two years and were determined to get off to a faster start at McConnell-Talbert Stadium and did so in their 28-18 win.
After a scoreless first quarter, Warner Robins methodically worked its way through a 16-play drive to score with 6:22 in the second quarter. Northside followed with a 38-yard field goal by Isaac Rivera late in the quarter to make it 7-3, but the Eagles never got closer to the lead.
Thats something wed talked about all week, Warner Robins head coach Bryan Way said. We told them that we gotta get out of the gate, not necessarily get up on them a lot, but we gotta play them even the first half and then take our chances from there on out.
The Demons built on their early lead to beat the Eagles for the first time since 2009. The loss was the first regular-season loss for Northside since that 2009 upsets.
Quarterback Caden Johnston said the win went according to plan.
Keep the game close. We talked about it, keep the game close, Johnston said. I think we got out there and just didnt let them come back. Our yardage wasnt outstanding, but we got the job done when we needed to get the job done.
Last year, the Demons trailed 21-0 at halftime but quickly scored two touchdowns in the third quarter. The Eagles and Demons each scored more two times each as Warner Robins lost 35-28.
In 2011, the Demons found themselves down early again, facing another 20-point deficit after the half, which grew to 22 by the end of the third. They started the climb back, getting within eight with two minutes left before eventually falling 32-24.
We felt like we had kind of outplayed them in the second half the last two years, but when youre down by 20, its hard to get all the way back, he said.
Warner Robins did cash in on a comeback in 2009. Facing yet another 20-point hole in the fourth, they racked up 21 points for a one-point win.
Northside won the 2010 game 28-7.
