The meets to determine qualifiers for the Nov. 9 GHSA cross country meet in Carrollton are taking place this week.
Vidalia placed second in the Region 2-AA boys meet it hosted Tuesday. Vidalias Paul Dixon was the individual winner.
The Area 4-A meet was held Tuesday at Schley County, with Hawkinsville winning both the boys and girls competitions. Hawkinsville freshman Melissa Reyes finished first among girls at that meet, while Levi Carr picked up a second-place finish among boys.
Mary Persons will host the Region 2-AAAA meet at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Monroe County Recreation Department. FPD will host the Area 1-A private school meet at 1 p.m. on Thursday at the Georgia Industrial Childrens Home. Also running Thursday is the Region 2-AAA meet at Dauset Trails in Jackson and the Area 4-A public school meet at Athens Christian.
Saturday, Jones County hosts the Region 2-AAAAA meet at 10:30 a.m. at Gray Station Middle School.
The top four teams in each region or area qualify for the state meet, as well as any individual runner placing in the top six in each region or area.
Avoiding the bubble
As far back as the first few weeks of the season, Hawkinsville has had an eye on the GHSA Class A public school football power ratings.
The Red Devils were on the outside of the 16-team playoffs looking in a year ago but got moving early this season with wins over Class AAA Dodge County and Class AAAA Perry after a quality loss to Class AA Bleckley County to open the season.
The final two weeks will be suspenseful ones as the Red Devils try to make it to the playoffs for the first time since 2010.
Hawkinsville is No. 13 with a 10.69 rating. And on the schedule? Region leader Marion County, No. 1 among public schools, and Pacelli, which is tied at 3-2 in region play with Hawkinsville and is also 13th on the private-school side.
The 5-3 Red Devils have won two straight after falling to Dooly County 17-6 and Brookstone 19-14.
