A Jones County man who was behind the wheel in a fatal accident that killed his granddaughter will be buried Thursday.

Terrell Leon “Terry” Land died Saturday, six days after 11-year-old Alana Blair Land was killed in a crash on Ga. 11 near Gray.

“He died due to complications from the injuries from the wreck,” said investigator Kenny Allen of the Jones County Sheriff’s Office.

The 62-year-old was not wearing his seat belt while driving a 1998 Chevrolet 1500 that went off the road in the 1800 block of Monticello Highway, Allen said.

“We really don’t know if he suffered a seizure ... or fell asleep or was distracted,” he said.

Deputies talked to Land right after the 4 p.m. crash Oct. 20, but he was not able to explain what happened.

His granddaughter was asleep in the back seat and wearing her seat belt when the truck hit a driveway culvert with such force that the passenger side front tire was pushed into the front seat, Allen said.
