A Macon man charged with attempted kidnapping after an incident at Springdale Elementary School is slated to stay in jail without bond for at least two weeks.
Magistrate Court Judge Barbara Harris said she cant set bond until a translator is found for Christian Ogol. The Bibb County Sheriffs Office said Ogol is a Nigerian man who speaks only Swahili. Ogol may be 68 years old.
In his first appearance hearing Thursday at the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center, Ogol was shaky and kept taking off his jail-issued footwear. He often tried to stand up, while a deputy pushed him back down onto a bench.
Ogol didnt answer questions but seemed to understand when Harris called his name in court.
Ogol also faces two counts of false imprisonment and one count of simple battery, according to the Bibb County Sheriffs Office. He was arrested around 11 p.m. Wednesday by Bibb County school police.
The charges stem from an incident at Springdale around the school release time, 3:45 p.m.
A mother, Patricia Thompson, told The Telegraph on Wednesday that a man had grabbed her son by the front of his wrap-around backpack and groped a girl through her hair at the front of the school. When her son screamed, other parents intervened and rushed the man away, she said. The school system said parents kept the man on school grounds until officials could respond.
David Gowan, the school systems director of risk management, said Springdale parents were concerned and asking questions Thursday. The school system evaluates security after every incident, he said.
Gowan said he couldnt discuss many details of the incident yet because he doesnt want to hamper the investigation or prosecution. He wouldnt say whether all the charges involved children as victims, but said all charges stemmed from Wednesdays episode.
Ogol also had a reason to be on campus.
He was here as part of the dismissal process, but I cant get into more detail with relations with people involved in this incident, Gowan said. He wasnt just some stranger that walked up to the school.
