KATHLEEN -- The Veterans Warhawks struggled to mount much of anything offensively and committed too many defensive mistakes to overcome the Wayne County Yellow Jackets as they were swept out of the GHSA Class AAAA softball playoffs 11-4 and 8-3 on Wednesday night.
Veterans led 4-1 in the first game after three innings, but the Yellow Jackets batted around in the fifth inning, scoring six times. Three straight batters reached and catcher Kali Price delivered a one-out double that drove home a pair of runs to give Wayne County a lead they nevered relinquish.
The Yellow Jackets added four more in the sixth to blow open the game. The Warhawks defense committed five errors and let several fly balls find grass due to miscommunication.
Veterans mustered just five hits off of Wayne County starting pitcher Myranda Hand as she picked up the complete game victory, striking out four.
The Warhawks tried to regroup in the second game, but Yellow Jackets pitcher Chloe Boulineau was simply too much. Boulineau struck out 15 hitters in seven innings to pick up the win.
But she gave Veterans plenty of opportunities by walking seven.
With Veterans trailing 8-1 in the sixth, Sierra Stella, Kayley Albritton and Katlynn Winner all delivered hits to lead off the inning and Stella scored to make it 8-2. Peyton Stallworth followed with a walk, and Veterans was in business, but strikeouts snuffed out the rally with only more run crossing the plate.
Yellow Jackets third baseman Hannah Farrell collected four hits in the two games, including a three-run RBI double off the left-center field wall in the second inning of game two to give Wayne County a 4-0 lead.
Veterans season comes to an end at 27-9-1. It won the Region 2-AAAA title during the regular season.
