Mary Persons and Veterans have separated themselves from the pack a bit in GHSA Region 2-AAAA with 4-0 region records.
So the Bulldogs and Warhawks appear to be in pretty good shape for a playoff spot.
But that pack behind them has a lot of work to do, and that includes Westside and Perry. The two teams, tied at 2-2 with Baldwin, face off on Thursday at the Ed DeFore Sports Complex.
This is a huge game, both for Perry and us in the playoff hunt, Westside head coach Sheddrick Risper said. They have a good team. Like us, theyve had a couple of losses, but they are pretty good.
The Seminoles earned a key win last week over Baldwin. If the Seminoles win Thursday, they would have the tiebreaker over the two teams they are most closely battling for playoff position.
West Laurens and Rutland are a game behind the 2-2 teams. Westside (4-3 overall) closes the regular season against Howard and Rutland.
That was huge; plus our kids really needed that win, Risper said of the victory over Baldwin. Weve been in a couple of tight ballgames with Northside, Veterans and Mary Persons.
We came out on the short end of the stick after our kids played so hard. We really needed a hard-fought game that we came out on top of, and against Baldwin, we did that, and I was so proud of our kids.
Perry dropped to 2-2 in region play last week with a loss to Veterans. Its other region loss came to Mary Persons.
The Panthers (2-5 overall) close the regular season against Rutland and Howard. Like the Seminoles, the Panthers defeated Baldwin.
When you reach this part of the season, theyre all big, Perry head coach Erik Soliday said. We have to just forget last week and move on. This is another big game for us, and our kids realize that. The good thing for us is we control our own destiny, and we dont have to rely on anyone else doing anything for us.
