Macon police responded to a report of a person shot at 1175 Calhoun St. Thursday after 3 a.m.

They found a man lying on the living room floor with a wound to his leg, a police incident report said.

The man told police he found a Smith & Wesson .38-caliber revolver on the right side of the living room couch, tried to remove it and instead shot himself.

His girlfriend, the gun’s owner, told authorities she kept it in the couch in response to a previous burglary.

EMS personnel took the man to The Medical Center of Central Georgia. The gun was returned to its owner.
