AC Pup celebrates three years as Telegraph columnist

October 18, 2013

Guess what I’m celebrating this week? I’m commemorating my third anniversary of being a Telegraph columnist. Can you believe it? I’ve been writing this weekly column in the newspaper for three years! I really don’t know where the time went.

I have a hard time grasping the reality that I’ve written 156 columns. But I have, starting with the first one on Oct. 16, 2010, introducing myself to The Telegraph’s audience and being introduced to the world of journalism.

I can honestly tell you I have the greatest admiration for people who write for a living. It is really hard work. So the next time you see journalists, give them a hug.

Although it’s a huge commitment, it also has great rewards. The incredible people at The Telegraph not only care about animals, but they’re also visionaries. They knew a weekly column about animals would benefit animals tremendously. And they were right.

They knew I had three very active Facebook pages now being followed by about 12,000 people total. My Facebook friends are really loyal and exceptionally responsive whenever I post about a lost pet or tell them about a pet or person in need.

But my friends at The Telegraph knew there is a segment of the population that doesn’t participate in the Facebook phenomenon. They felt we could help even more animals if we ran a weekly column in the newspaper and put pictures of pets with local rescue group information on the page as well.

So my nonprofit group Central Georgia CARES partnered with The Telegraph, CARES taught me how to write and the rest is history. But typing on the keyboard with my clumsy paws continues to be a challenge.

Thank goodness for spell-check.

We’ve had great success for the animals through the pet page. Many of the pets featured on my page have found good homes simply because their pictures were published. That’s been a great help to the rescue groups since every adoption makes room for other pets to be saved.

Not only has my page been able to save many pets, but the column also has raised awareness about a variety of animal-related issues. It’s awakened a community of animals lovers to unite to take action to help vulnerable pets.

That makes me so happy. I know I’m not alone in my quest to help animals. I know you stand with me. And together there’s just no limit to what we can accomplish.

So to everyone who reads my column each week, please know how much I appreciate it. And to The Telegraph who had the foresight to see how my column would enlighten, entertain and educate an audience, I offer a sincere word of gratitude.

The past three years have been awesome. I’m looking forward to many more years of writing.
