Watkins tops Jones to claim District 8 seat

Virgil Watkins Jr. held off fellow Macon City Councilman Charles Jones to win Tuesday’s runoff for the District 8 Macon-Bibb County Commission seat in the new consolidated government.

Watkins held the lead most of the night before taking a 1,688-1,502 victory over Jones.

Watkins was with supporters when he got the news he had won.

“All right, all right, all right!” he said. “Man, it feels good. We worked hard. I’d like to thank all my supporters. I want to make a promise that I’m going to do a good job and work hard.”

Jones wished Watkins well, but he said this wouldn’t be his last run for office.

“(Watkins) is a good guy, and he ran a real good race,” Jones said. “I wish the city well. I’m proud of the way we ran the race.”

Watkins said there’s a sense of relief that the campaign is finally over. He said his goals include helping build the new government, making sure the budget is sound and working out a memorandum of understanding with the Bibb County school board so the government can help improve educational opportunities.
