Almost four years after opening a store on Northside Drive in Macon, Gottwals Books is moving to a site on Riverside Drive.
Gottwals, which currently has about 3,200 square feet of space at 3780 Northside Drive, will be moving into the former Crate clothing store at 2834 Riverside Drive, said Shane Gottwals, who owns the business with his wife, Abbey. The new location has about 5,000 square feet of space.
Since he needs to sublease his current location, Shane Gottwals said it could be early 2014 before the move happens.
Gottwals Books, which sells used books, first opened in Warner Robins in 2007.
Other than having more space, Gottwals said there were really two big factors for moving.
It seems like the traffic flow is far better (on Riverside), he said. And in the book industry all you really need to do is have a big sign that says books, and anybody who loves to read is going to check you out. The more drive-by traffic we can get, the better it is for our business.
The other main reason for the move is plain and simple financials, he said. We own the Crate building. Its a lot nicer to buy your building. The improvements you make are your own, and over time it makes more sense financially.
Gottwals has already put $60,000 into renovations, and the work is 95 percent complete, he said.
Since construction work on the new Riverside Drive interchange with Interstate 75 is nearly complete, Gottwals said he hopes more retailers will move into the Riverside corridor and especially the mostly vacant Riverside Plaza shopping center.
If we can get good retail in there, it will attract more retail and restaurants, he said. Its such a prime location. We are excited about the opportunity.
In addition to the Warner Robins and Macon locations, Gottwals also has stores in Byron and Perry. The Gottwals began franchising nearly two years ago under the name Walls of Books. They have one store in Tifton with another in New Orleans nearly ready to open.
