Staff reportOctober 12, 2013

A 13-year-old shot late Friday afternoon died Saturday night at a hospital.

Marquez Blount was pronounced dead at 6:38 p.m. at The Medical Center of Central Georgia of a gunshot wound to the head, said Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones. A 16-year-old was caught a short distance from the 600-block of Cleveland Street, where the shooting happened.

Witnesses told police that the teenagers were handling a gun when it discharged. Police recovered the gun. The 16-year-old shooter has been charged with possession of a firearm by a person under the age of 18 and possession of a firearm with an altered serial number. The 16-year-old is being held at the Regional Youth Development Center, and additional charges are expected.

An autopsy on the victim will not be done until Tuesday.

A man who lives down the street said he heard one gun shot, then saw one person lying in the street and another one running away. He said he didn’t know the victim or the shooter.
