A man escaped from the Monroe County courthouse soon after being sentenced to 20 years on a burglary charge Wednesday and led authorities on a chase in a stolen sheriffs office patrol car.
Jeffrey Keith Sligh, 36, of Jackson, was at the Monroe County courthouse in Forsyth being tried on burglary and arson charges. He was convicted of the burglary, according to a GBI news release.
Sligh escaped while deputies were in the process of taking him into custody. He left the courthouse in his vehicle and was involved in an accident a short distance away from the courthouse, according to the release.
Sligh stole a patrol car and led deputies on a chase to the Ga. 83 ramp onto Interstate 75 north, where he was apprehended, according to the release.
Gunshots were fired at some point during the incident, but no one was injured. The GBI is conducting a use of force investigation, according to the release.
