Seafood fresh and tasty at Fish Port

Super Dock sandwich with fries and lemonade is a tasty bargain at Fish Port in Macon.


Once you have Fish Port, you’ll never settle for fast food fish again.

First, you’ve got the fish. Fish Less fresh might not stand up to the battering and frying that Fish Port puts their fish through. But this fish is tender, moist and full of flavor.

Second, the batter is a bit spicy and friendly with pepper, and the sauce that comes with it makes it even more so. In fact, a warning for folks who love but can’t do spicy: Tell them not to give you the sauce. When you smell it, you’ll want it, and you will regret it a half hour later.

The platter is the best deal: For $15 we got a deviled crab -- baked and served in its shell -- plus two pieces of fish, lots of fried oysters, scallops, cole slaw and hush puppies. The scallops seemed a bit undercooked, but the other items were plentiful enough to still make it a good deal.

The hush puppies were golden brown on the outside but seemed almost dry on the inside, but when we cooked our leftovers in the oven the next night, they were excellent. In fact, if you over-order like we did, all of it baked up better as leftovers than it tasted the first time. The cole slaw is mayonnaise-free and sweet, making it a nice balance for the hot and spicy fish.

The Super Dock, a sandwich stuffed tall with about six inches of fish, lettuce and tomato, was more than we could eat in one sitting, even at $5.99. Because the bread is just sliced-loaf type bread, it had a hard time holding up to its interior. I’d recommend a heartier, toasted bread to keep it all together better.

The fish and chicken platter comes with fries and cole slaw for $8.99. The chicken and fries are not anything special, but they’re not bad either. The onion rings reminded me of a less-greasy version of the Varsity’s giant onion rings and were only $1.78 for a large order.

The neighborhood surrounding the Fish Port is a bit sketchy. The ladies inside are all kinds of nice, though, and they work really hard to make good food.

If I were to break down the star rating I’m giving Fish Port, it would be food: 3 stars; value: 3.5 stars; and ambience: 0.5. That averages out and rounds up to 2.5 stars. Considering there’s not much they can do about their surroundings, the Fish Port is a highly recommended, down home, take home fried fish restaurant.
