CENTERVILLE -- Incumbent City Councilman Randall Wright faces opposition from Michael Evans for the Post 2 seat in the Nov. 5 election.

Both candidates say they want to give back to their community and tackle issues facing the city.

“I enjoy being able to help and serve people,” Wright said. “I enjoy working with our senior citizens and being able to serve them every chance I get.”

Wright, 66, has lived in Centerville 35 years. First elected to the council in 1989, he left when a job relocation took him out of state. He was re-elected upon his return and has served a total of 18 years.

He said highlights of his service include the city’s construction of a new City Hall and the near completion of a law enforcement center. He said he also is proud of his role as liaison between the council and the Centerville Recycling Center where he volunteers.

“I hope to return to council and continue work toward creating more pedestrian sidewalks and seeing improvement projects come to fruition,” Wright said. “We need to build sidewalks to connect a number of them that have been built. I also look forward to working with the mayor and council to seek ways to grow our commercial tax base to take the tax burden off residents. Right now the tax burden is 70 percent on citizens and 30 percent on business.”

Wright said he also wants to foster new and ongoing partnerships between individuals and businesses to bring about “home grown” community improvements, such as past partnerships that previously created flower beds and placed benches at intersections, planted trees and undertook other beautification and community improvement projects.

Evans, 51, said he wants to return to public service after serving as a council member in Stone Mountain, a community of about 7,000 near Atlanta.

There, he served as chairman of the economic development committee and was a member of the public safety and public service committees.

“I’ve reached the point where I want to serve and give back to the community I’m a part of,” Evans said. “I want to take the opportunity to help better our community for our children, our citizens and our seniors. Being on City Council allows you to serve and lead in the community, and that’s what I’m striving to do.”

Evans said he came to Middle Georgia as a member of the Air Force Reserve serving as a logistics officer and program manager.

He said he stayed because Centerville reminds him of his hometown of Beaufort, S.C., and offers a slower-paced lifestyle than a big city but is not far from one.

He said he has lived in Centerville six years.

Evans said he would like to see additional parks built for families, and he intends to work to see Centerville continue to be a safe place to live by supporting the city’s police and fire departments.

Evans said he was looking forward to hearing residents’ concerns and working to find solutions to whatever needs they present.
