New Macon store burglarized before grand opening

Before a Macon business could earn its first buck, a pair of burglars swiped two safes, one with nearly $3,000 in it, and racked up about $500 in damage.

At 2:13 a.m. Tuesday, two men broke through the glass front door of the new G Food Mart Sunoco at 3306-B Bloomfield Drive, according to a Macon police news release.

The two tripped an alarm. A police officer arrived at the store near Williamson Road eight minutes later but missed the thieves by about three minutes.

Surveillance-video footage of the break-in showed the culprits smashing their way into the store with a crowbar, a police incident report noted.

The men kicked open an office door behind the counter and damaged the alarm system.

Both men were wearing dark clothes, hooded sweatshirts and gloves, according to the release.
