2nd candidate enters Warner Robins Post 4 council race

WARNER ROBINS -- A Robins Air Force Base program manager has entered the race for a vacated City Council seat.

Ben Campbell, 54, said he would bring a younger perspective to council with the goal of uniting residents and council to achieve common goals.

“Most of the people on the council -- and no offense to any of them -- are retired and aren’t up to date on current business practices,” Campbell said.

Campbell is now the second name on the special election ballot for the seat Mike Brashear abandoned last week to run for the mayor’s office. Local businessman Tim Thomas, 50, signed up for the Post 4 race Monday. Qualifying for the race ends 12:30 p.m. Thursday.

Campbell said he saw the power of numbers last year when he and neighbors in Harper’s Ridge subdivision banded together to successfully defeat a Planning and Zoning decision.

Like most candidates this year, a top issue for Campbell is the possibility of a Base Realignment and Closure Commission. But his angle is a bit different. He said he wants to focus on placing Warner Robins in a position so the base closing wouldn’t mean the city’s end.

“If we build an alternate economic engine to the city, then if BRAC happens, we’re not dead,” Campbell said. “If it doesn’t, then we’re better off than we were before.”

Campbell said he has experience with budgets between $50 million and $75 million and could responsibly manage city funds.

“It wouldn’t be like Monopoly money like some people seem to think it is sometimes,” Campbell said.
