A man was hit by a Norfolk-Southern train at about 9 a.m. Wednesday behind the Marathon gas station on Vineville Avenue.

The 34-year-old is expected to survive his injuries, said Jami Gaudet, public information officer for the Macon Police Department.

The train came to a stop about a quarter of a mile away and blocked the Brookdale Avenue crossing for about an hour until investigators allowed the train to move on.

Macon-Bibb County firefighters were first on the scene, and paramedics provided initial care.

They put the victim on a backboard and braced his neck before an ambulance arrived to take him to the hospital.

Macon police officers and the traffic unit will investigate the accident, as will the railroad company, Gaudet said.

“And I think we’ll investigate what the person was doing around the track at that time,” she said.
