What we learned

Hester can make a difference: It didn’t take long for Barney Hester’s influence to take hold. In his first game as the Howard head coach, the Huskies snapped a 24-game losing streak in a win over East Laurens.

Not missing a beat: Mark Farriba made a successful return to Stratford, leading the Eagles to a 28-7 win over Westwood on Thursday.

We’re still doing OK: New head coach Clint Morgan has fit it well so far at Tattnall Square, leading the Trojans to a win over Westfield on Friday and a 2-0 start overall.

Looking forward

Howard at Southwest, Thursday: Can the Huskies make it two straight? Howard has never won two in a row. Southwest head coach Joe Dupree is looking for his first win since returning to lead his alma mater.

Mary Persons at Jones County, Friday: Both teams will be seeking to extend their momentum as the region schedule draws closer. Mary Persons beat rival Jackson on Friday, while the Greyhounds knocked off Alcovy in overtime.

Houston County at Tift County, Friday: Fresh off a win in their season opener, the Bears face a tough test in Tifton from the Class AAAAAA Blue Devils.

Peach County at Baldwin, Friday: This has been one of the better rivalries in Middle Georgia over the past decade. The Braves will be seeking to get back on track following a loss to Jefferson County.

Spalding at Rutland, Friday: The Hurricanes are seeking their first 2-0 start in school history.

Central at Northeast, Friday: The Raiders knocked off Twiggs County in their opener, while the Chargers are hoping to erase the memories of a 50-13 loss to Westside.
