Scammers claiming to be employees of Tri-County Electric Corp. recently tried to get credit card payments over the phone.
Members were told the company had lost their checks and that their service would be disconnected if they did not pay immediately, according to a company news release.
We just wanted to warn people, said Greg Mullis, vice president of energy services.
Tri-County members will never be forced to make a payment over the phone to avoid having their power cut off, the release explained.
If you receive a suspicious call, hang up and call Tri-County EMC at 866-254-8100 and report the scam to your local law enforcement agency.
Tri-County serves Jones, Baldwin, Putnam, Bibb, Twiggs, Wilkinson, Jasper and Morgan counties.
