Georgia man dies in Monroe County wreck

A Flovilla man was killed in a single-car accident about 7 p.m. Friday in Monroe County.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office received a call about an accident on Ga. 42 south, according to a news release. Terry Smith, 47, was driving a 1960s model Ford Galaxy when the car left the roadway and struck a tree.

The vehicle then caught fire while Smith was trapped inside. Once extricated, Smith was transported to Grady Hospital in Atlanta by LifeFlight, where he died due to his injuries. Smith had a suspended driver’s license and alcohol is believed to be a factor in the accident, according to the release.

The accident is under investigation.
