State Sen. David Lucas is denying that he put his hands around the neck of an autistic 14-year-old boy during a Wednesday campaign event for his wife, Macon Councilwoman Elaine Lucas.
The Bibb County Sheriffs Office is investigating an alleged incident between David Lucas and a grandson of Macon-Bibb District 3 commission candidate Terry Tripp, according to sheriffs office officials. Tripp is running for the commission seat against Elaine Lucas.
David Lucas on Thursday denied grabbing anyone, saying he was only acting as a peacemaker after his son Lenny Lucas got into a verbal altercation with members of Tripps family.
According to an incident report filed by Tripps daughter Kinya Miller, the incident took place at an Elaine Lucas campaign event Wednesday evening at the Lakeview Apartments clubhouse at 2800 Masseyville Road.
David Lucas said he began to lose his temper when one of Tripps grandchildren started shouting at him, but other people stepped in and restrained Lucas.
Someone shouted fight! and I ran over there, David Lucas said. My son had taken off his shirt and was ready to fight. I stepped in between them. ... Folks grabbed me. I didnt touch no 13- or 14-year-old.
According to the sheriffs report, the incident started when Lenny Lucas and Millers 16-year-old son, Chandler King, exchanged words. At some point, David Lucas allegedly grabbed Chandler Kings brother, 14-year-old Chase King, around the throat area, the sheriffs report said.
No bruises were found on the teens neck, according to the report. Tripp said her grandson has autism.
Lucas said an off-duty law enforcement officer was at the scene and broke up the crowd, ordering Tripps family to leave the premises.
Though it was a communitywide event that the Lucas family was holding, David Lucas said the Tripp family wasnt invited.
Elaine was having this thing, he said. Why was (the family of) Terry Tripp even out there?
Tripp said she didnt attend the event, so she couldnt say what happened there. She said a family member told her it was a community event, not a Lucas campaign rally. The Lucases said it was a campaign event that was open to the community.
Sheriffs Capt. Mike Smallwood said investigators are in the process of interviewing several witnesses and examining video from the scene. No arrest warrants had been issued as of late Thursday afternoon.
David Lucas on Thursday alleged that Tripp and her supporters orchestrated the incident at the apartments. What this is, its nothing but a media ploy, he said. She knows shes running behind.
