Prep sports notebook: Bears, Eagles to hit road for softball openers

Prep softball will get in full swing this week with numerous games on the schedule.

Houston County will play a road contest at Northside-Columbus on Wednesday, before heading to metro Atlanta and participating in the 2013 Georgia Dugout Club Softball Leadoff Classic.

The Bears will play five games in two days during the weekend against Forsyth Central, Lovett, Kennesaw Mountain, Chapel Hill and Bremen, before returning home to host Perry on Tuesday.

The Bears advanced to the second round of the GHSA Class AAAAA state playoffs in 2012.

The Northside Eagles will play a road game at Veterans on Wednesday, before returning home to host Rutland on Thursday. Also on the schedule for Thursday is a Warner Robins home game against county rival Perry.

Peach County will take a step up in classification when they go to Mary Persons on Friday, while Perry returns home to host First Presbyterian Day School.

Warner Robins volleyball team set to open season

Warner Robins volleyball gets their season into high gear with numerous matches on the schedule this week

The Demons will host Lee County and Mary Persons in a pair of games Thursday, before traveling to Union Grove on Saturday to participate in the Play for a Cure Classic.

Tuesday’s schedule also has a pair of matches with the Demons hosting Northside-Columbus and Baldwin.

Veterans will play a doubleheader against West Laurens and Eagles Landing on Tuesday.

Veterans football team greets fans, students

Veterans football hosted its annual Meet, Eat and Greet event on Tuesday.

The event is a chance for fans and students to mingle with the players, coaches and cheerleaders and serves as a kickoff to the football season.

The event was catered by Shane’s Rib Shack of Warner Robins.

Scrimmages signal opening of football season

Many area teams will begin their 2013 football season with scrimmages this week.

The Warner Robins Demons’ football scrimmage against Rutland on Thursday has been moved to Perry High School at 7 p.m.

Construction delays at McConnell-Talbert Stadium in preparation for the upcoming season forced the change of venue.

Northside will travel to play Peach County at 7:30 Friday night in Fort Valley.

Von Lassiter will lead Houston County onto the field for the first time when the Bears square off against Perry in the Panther Pit on Friday at 7:30.
