A Fort Valley man lost control of his pickup and swerved into oncoming traffic in a fatal accident Wednesday morning in south Macon.
Marco Romero-Castaneda, 52, of Marshall Mill Road, died at The Medical Center of Central Georgia just before 11:40 a.m., Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones said.
Romero-Castaneda was headed south on Pio Nono Avenue when he hit the curve near Houston Avenue, crossed the median and went into the northbound lanes of Ga. 247, according to a news release from the Macon Police Department.
The 2004 Mazda pickup, originally reported to be a Ford Ranger, slid into the path of a fully loaded 2005 Mack dump truck headed north near the merger of Broadway.
The dump truck slammed into the passenger side of the pickup at the merger with Broadway.
The passenger side mirror of the pickup truck is embedded in the headlight of the dump truck, Jones said.
Macon police fatality investigators were called to the scene due to the serious nature of the accident that happened just after 10 a.m. Wednesday in what's known as the Seven Bridges area.
Traffic backed up on northbound Ga. 247 as all lanes were blocked.
Officers detoured vehicles onto Broadway, where they could turn on Guy Paine Road to make it back to Pio Nono Avenue.
Once investigators documented the vehicles positions and measured distances traveled, wreckers started clearing the road about noon.
Reports from the scene indicated the dump truck had a 59,000 pound load, which complicated its removal.
