Richt on Clowney: 'The best football player in the world'

GWINNETT - There has been plenty of lavish praise for Jadeveon Clowney, but Mark Richt may have issued the topper.

The South Carolina junior defensive end "might be the very best player who exists today, at any level," according to Richt. Yes, at any level.

The comments came during a UGA Day fan event on Monday. A fan asked Richt this question: Who would be tougher to gameplan against, Clowney or Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel?

"I would think it would be tougher to gameplan Johnny Manziel," Richt said.

But he quickly added:

"I would say Clowney is the best football player in the world though. Seriously. I think he might be the very best player who exists today, at any level."

Clowney, expected to be the No. 1 overall pick in April's NFL draft, has ravaged Georgia's backfield the past two years. He had a sack and a game-deciding forced fumble two years ago. Last year he had a sack and two tackles-for-loss.

So why would Manziel be tougher to gameplan? Richt went on to explain why:

"You pretty much know how Clowney is going to line up. So you can scheme him easier than you scheme Johnny Football. You don't know where he's gonna go. You can defend everything and all of a sudden he takes off."
