Fencing along the Interstate 16 median failed to keep a vehicle from crossing into oncoming traffic in a serious accident Friday about 12:30 p.m.

A woman driving eastbound toward Savannah traveled along the retention lines for about 50 yards before compromising the barrier and crossing the median, said Chief Deputy Billy Boney of the Twiggs County Sheriff’s Office.

Her white Ford Fusion went across westbound lanes of traffic into the guardrail, down an embankment and into a tree, Boney said.

“With as much traffic as there is out there, it was just a miracle she didn’t hit somebody else,” he said.

The victim was conscious when loaded into an ambulance headed toward The Medical Center of Central Georgia, but her identity and condition were not immediately available.

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the accident but did not release more information Friday evening.
