At least four people participated in a group beating at downtown Macons Zodiac Lounge just before a Macon teenager was shot to death.
Andre Maurice Bonner, 30, Arthur Thomas Freeman III, 27, Kiyo Latrice Johnson, 30, and Jarrett Durand Taylor, 27, beat 21-year-old Deion Davis just before he was shot eight times, arrest warrants show. Davis is still being treated at a hospital, Macon police said Friday.
Police have not said what they think prompted the fight.
Its unclear whether Davis knew 17-year-old Jamonni Bland, who was fatally shot after a fight at the bikini bar July 5. Police say Davis has not acknowledged knowing Bland.
Arrest warrants for Bonner, Freeman, Johnson, Taylor, and 27-year-old Miranda Victoria Pettiway, the alleged getaway driver, contend that the five are members of the Mafia street gang. Each one is charged with criminal participation in street gang activity and attempted murder. Bonner and Pettiway are also charged with murder.
On Friday, police said they still were investigating whether Davis is a gang member. So far, there hasnt been a link connecting Davis to a gang. Officers havent said whether they believe Bland was a gang member.
Several photos of Bland depict him wearing blue clothing -- a hat, shirt and sneakers -- and his hands signing the letter C. The color and hand signal are widely associated with the Crips street gang.
Bonner, Freeman, Johnson and Taylor were denied bond Friday during a hearing in Bibb County Magistrate Court. All four requested a commitment hearing, a time when police testify about why they made an arrest. Hearings for the four are scheduled for July 23.
Pettiway, who also is being held without bond on charges of murder, criminal attempt to commit murder and participation in criminal street gang activity, was in court Thursday. She also requested a commitment hearing, which has been scheduled for July 25.
Pettiway drove Bonner and 27-year-old John Michael Hollingshed after Bonner shot Bland five times at close range and Hollingshed shot Davis, according to the warrants.
Bonner was shot in the neck during the confrontation. Steven Billue, 25, was shot in the shoulder.
In court Friday, Bonner had a bandage on his neck. Freeman had a bandage above his left eye.
Deputies led Bonner, Freeman, Johnson and Taylor into the courtroom one by one so they could see the judge separately. Only Freeman had an attorney.
Johnson also was arrested on an outstanding misdemeanor theft by deception charge.
Police still are searching for Johnifer Dernard Barnwell, 27; Jimmy Scott II, 29; and Hollingshed. Each one will be charged with criminal attempt to commit murder and participation in criminal street gang activity, police said. Hollingshed also is wanted in the slaying of Bland, according to police.
Police have said security guards broke up a fight inside the club early that morning, and people involved in the fight later re-entered the building and shooting began. Shots were also fired in a nearby parking garage.
The Zodiac Lounge is located at the RiverView Event Center near Walnut Street and Broadway.
