A man suspected in a home burglary in Centerville is in custody after a foot chase Monday morning in which he scaled fences behind homes and ran down a drainage ditch.

Stephen Alan Dillingham, 18, of Centerville, was charged with burglary and obstruction of law enforcement officers for fleeing from police officers and Houston County sheriff’s deputies, said Centerville police Maj. W.G. “Garrett” Cooley.

Dillingham is charged in the burglary of a home in the 100-block of Manchester Court as well three others in the same area in the past two months, Cooley said.

At 10:07 a.m. Monday, an alarm at the Manchester Court home alerted police to a possible intruder. An officer came across Dillingham, who had been running and was sweating, on Evelyn Drive, Cooley said.

Dillingham fled -- scrambling over a fence, running down a ditch line and then climbing over other fences across the backyards of residences, Cooley said. Dillingham was taken into custody in the 100-block of Crestwood Circle at 11:16 a.m. by a Centerville officer and sheriff’s deputy who ran in front of the homes as Dillingham ran through the back.

Anyone who may have information related to the burglaries is asked to contact police Sgt. Phillip Pritchett or Sgt. Chuck Hadden at 953-4222.
