For 10 years, Macon Little Theatres Kids Camp has been teaching Middle Georgia children the finer points of acting.
The two-week summer session will culminate in a production for family, friends and the community. This year, 54 youth ages 9-18 have been rehearsing in preparation for this weekends performances of Disneys The Little Mermaid Jr.
Were very excited about doing The Little Mermaid because its not been done in the area. Its a relatively new version of the Broadway stage production, director Sylvia Haynie said, adding that about half of the campers are camp veterans and half are new.
Sophie Leicht, a veteran of the mini-camp, for ages 5-8, will lead the production as Ariel, and Alexis Webb will play the sea witch Ursula. Both will be available for photos in the lobby after the shows.
Both young ladies have amazing voices and are going to be impressive for audience members of all ages, Haynie said.
The Disney Jr. productions are shortened versions of major theatrical productions that are presented in kid-friendly ways, such as the keys the songs are written in being changed so that its more comfortable for young performers, Haynie said.
The Little Mermaid Jr. includes all of the songs people are familiar with from the movie and includes a couple of surprising new ones, she said.
The Kids Camp is conducted in partnership with the Academy of the Performing Arts.
