A 53-year-old Macon woman died at the scene of a horrific crash on Tucker Road about 5:50 a.m. Thursday.
Bernadine Mbata, of Northridge Drive, was going to work when her 2006 Nissan Pathfinder went off the road, hit a tree and burst into flames, Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones said.
Clint Scott, who lives at the corner of Idleway Drive and Tucker, said the crash woke him up.
We came outside and I saw the car had hit the tree and it was flipped upside down, on fire, Scott said. Me and another gentleman noticed someone was in the vehicle, and we tried to pull her out before it went up.
Scott and the other man pulled Mbata from the burning car, but she was already dead, he said
This is a bad curve, Scott said. We usually get one of these a year.
Macon-Bibb County firefighters quickly put out the flames.
Bibb County deputies blocked Tucker Road at Richmond Hill Drive as the Georgia State Patrol investigated and took measurements of the skid marks.
Mbatas tire tracks showed she was headed north toward Forsyth Road and left the road just past the traffic light at Idleway.
The SUV hit the Scotts mailbox and driveway culvert before flipping across his lawn into a tall tree on his property line.
