Aluminum foil and fire are all you will need to cook up some camp food this Memorial Day.
High Falls State Park is hosting Campfire Cooking 101 to demonstrate ways to simplify campground meals.
This is the first time weve tried this out, said Alyson Snipes, who is the naturalist for High Falls. Weve had some people ask us, as we have a lot of campers here. We tried to meet the demand (by hosting) a little cooking class.
She said the emphasis will be on campfire cooking with nothing more than aluminum foil.
Were not using the big cast iron things, Snipes said. Well have some basic dishes. A little appetizer, a main course meal and a dessert you can cook. Its not your usual hot dogs, but a little bit more.
The menu includes bannock, which is a simple bread, campfire potatoes and orange brownies.
Snipes said shes cooked with foil a few times while camping on her days off.
Ive been involved with the Boy Scout program since I was 16 and that is usually how we would always cook, she said. If we were out in the back country, all we would have is aluminum foil, and thats how I learned.
High Falls will provide all of the supplies and food as part of the $5 participation fee.
If they want, they can bring an eating utensil, Snipes said. Bring a fork, that is probably about it.
She is planning to demonstrate how the food can be cooked and give participants a chance to try cooking as well.
Well try to make enough food for everyone to get a good portion, Snipes said.
Participants also will get a pamphlet with all of the recipes.
If you are interested in participating, we ask you to register ... so we can make sure we have enough food, Snipes said.
The class will be held in the lakeside program area, which is next to Shelter No. 4.
Theres a campfire ring up there, Snipes said. Well have all the makings, all the food ready.
High Falls is located outside Jackson and sits along the Towaliga River.
The park includes 100 campsites and six yurts, which are tent-like structures made of wood and canvas.
Other activities at High Falls include fishing, hiking, kayak and canoe rental, swimming and a playground area.
