Lane Elementary fourth-grade teacher Donna Hutchins holds one of the seven turtles released in the school’s courtyard Monday. Hutchins’ class has been temporarily keeping the turtle in her classroom while the courtyard was being renovated. Seven turtles were released into new digs at Lane -- a completely renovated courtyard. The turtles -- Olivia, Desiree, Sparkey, Freddy, Sam, Mattey and Mack -- had been temporarily living in classrooms at the school while the renovation work was completed. The school’s media specialist, Jane Hardy, and media clerk Denise Brewton spearheaded the two-year effort to revamp the courtyard, which had fallen into disrepair. Hardy said the students raised $485 with a "Save the Turtles" campaign and a "Turtle Sock Hop" netted $900. The school applied for and received a $2,700 grant from the Lowe’s Toolbox for Education program. She thanked the community and Mid Georgia Property Enhancements for the effort they had put into the finished project. The school’s principal, Lynn Stephens, liked the end result too, saying the best thing was "the pride that the students have for the new courtyard." It’s not too bad if you’re a turtle, either.
