Student beats cancer, will graduate high school: Mitchell Mock was 13 years old when he was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor.
Now, the Jones County High School senior is preparing to graduate and is pursuing a career as a registered nurse. Its a career that will allow Mock to care for others, just as he has been helped over the years.
The teenager was in shock when doctors gave him the life-altering news.
I was scared and did not know what to do, other than cry, he said.
Doctors removed the tumor, but they encountered complications. As a result, Mock is deaf in his left ear and, for a while, his swallowing, vision and motor skills were impaired. After several months, everything healed except his hearing.
Now, Mock is grateful for the past six years and life experiences, such as his sisters wedding, the birth of his niece, his senior prom -- and now graduation. He looks forward to more moments like those, starting with attending college.
I have won the battle with cancer, he said. Now, he has been given the chance to make difference in someone elses life and pay my blessings forward.
